Remakes seem to be the new fad for Hollywood as they continue to remake movie after movie and thus we have a new version of The Crazies but none other than zombie film maker George A Romero.
As with many remakes things change while some stay the same. The film takes place in Ogden Marsh, a small farming town in Iowa where the local sheriff and his deputy try to survive as a bio-logical outbreak starts to turn the mid-mannered townsfolk into deranged killers.
The military is not seen as as foolish and abusive as the original work. It focus’ in the background on the governments response to a bio-logical outbreak rather than going down the same road as 1973. This is refreshing to me in that we are not in the same mindset as back then with the end of Vietnam and being the in cold war.
The action is constant in the 2010 version. While director Breck Eisner could have left out the opening scene of the town center gone to hell the movie keeps the tension following to make you think that you’re never safe. Whether you’re walking down a field, playing baseball or alone with friends their is always a sense of dread that the person right beside you will be the next to snap. Very few movies keep this theme going well but The Crazies pulls this off masterfully.
The plot follows the basics of the original but does lay out more social dynamics like a bitter mom/son combination who are bitter over the death of their husband/father. Additionally, updated the roles of the main characters from the original so that instead of firemen we get police officers which better explains weapons proficiencies.
Lastly, the roles of the Crazies were really updated in that its more of an infection. You can see it working in someone. You can see not just in their actions but in their physical being the effects of the outbreak. Also, these are not your mindless zombies types that you would expect from a Romero film. The Crazies actually have thought behind their actions. To them their not infected and what they are doing makes sense to them, just not so much to you if your on the wrong end of a gun.
Overall I enjoyed the film as it was a good take on an existing story. I was glad to see that the movie got a national release and did not get a direct to video release. Be sure to check out The Crazies at theaters near you.
